Maine Fall Afternoon

This pastel was painted from a photo I took on vacation. I painted this scene many times in an impressionistic style using local color and was not satisfied with the finished product. I decided to try a more abstract approach using a limited color palette which suggests the fall leaves, the intense shadows and the water. I painted right over one of the other versions of the painting which add a depth to the overall effect.
