my starting point was a live bouquet of flowers. I "sketch" them in laying some pan pastels. While I use the live flowers as a basis, I quickly begin to follow the direction the painting takes. I sometimes sketch with a pencil and then begin the many layers, fat over lean in terms of the choice of pastels.
